Eighteen-year-old Alexis Jordan is the newest face to emerge from the arsenal of talent under the Roc Nation umbrella. On her debut single “Happiness,” produced by Stargate, the South Carolina songstress belts out her affection for one lucky boy over an easy, breezy tune designed for the dance floor.
Alexis recently spoke with Rap-Up.com about her first album, due this fall. “It’s a universal album; it’s going to be insane,” she revealed. “Every single song I love, and not many artists can say that. There’s a lot of uptempo, midtempo, and ballads.”

It was a bittersweet night for rap fans at the Middle East on Thursday, as hip-hop heads gathered to pay tribute to the late Guru, the Boston-bred MC who succumbed to cancer April 19.
Thursday’s show, which clocked in at just less than four hours, featured moments of silence, dedications and a number of selections from the rapper’s tenure with legendary duo Gang Starr.
Cries of “rest in peace, Guru” were about as frequent as a cappella attacks on Solar, the Guru associate/producer who many believe was the agent of Guru’s demise.
Guru, born Keith Elam in Roxbury, died at age 48. The virtual patriarch of the Boston rap scene and a key figure in hip-hop, he influenced a collective of would-be Boston rappers and established an inimitable street-scholar aesthetic with DJ Premier via Gang Starr and then with a series of solo “Jazzmatazz” albums.
Performers included such local come-ups as North Shore rapper M-Dot, duo Blak Madeen, Mattapan MC Singapore Kane and Boston rap mainstay Akrobatik, who doused their sets with original songs, Gang Starr material, dedications to Guru and, oftentimes, Solar disses.
Rappers didn’t just credit Guru with their careers, they demonstrated the principles he preached – an emphasis on skill, versatility and perfecting the craft.
Akrobatik morphed from party starter to hyperspeed rapper and finally, heartfelt eulogizer over the beat to Gang Starr’s “Royalty.”
Boston native Reks tore up the stage as if possessed, including exquisite rap tracks such as “Pray for Me” and the DJ Premier-produced “Say Goodnight” interspersed with crowd-assisted chants of “Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal,” the breakdown of Guru’s moniker.
Lawrence wordsmith Termanology leapt onstage as if sprung from a trampoline – or a rocket launcher – and performed songs including “Watch How it Go down,” acknowledging the sadness of the moment but the positivity of reuniting a veritable hip-hop family.
The night also included performances by Boston rapper and Gang Starr affiliate Krumb Snatcha and Brooklyn rap veteran Jeru the Damaja, who credits Guru with saving his life.
Mattapan native big Shug, the founding member of the Gang Starr foundation and longtime friend of Guru, included his verse on Gang Starr’s “Militia” and ended the night with Stevie Wonder’s “Ribbon in the Sky.”
Perhaps the most powerful segment was DJ/producer Statik Selektah’s series of classic Gang Starr tracks, transporting the audience back to an era when lyrical dexterity and lucid messages earned more clout than bank accounts, whips and chains.
But the tribute indicated that even if the draw of boom bap is waning in the face of commercial values that undermine hip-hop culture, the passion of those dedicated to the underground – and to key architects such as the late, great Guru – will never die.
TRIBUTE TO GURU
At the Middle East, Thursday night.

[NEW] Soulja Boy – Kiss me Thru the Phone Slowed And Throwed
they da best freestylers you can find

This is the only weekly wrestling program that I actually look forward to on a consistent basis. It’s usually decent and has nice long matches with little to no unnecessary backstage vignettes or comedy segments. I fear with the additions of Chavo Guerrero and Hornswoggle to the Smackdown roster that this may be in danger. I guess we’ll find out tonight.
Smackdown starts off on a questionable foot with Matt Hardy.
Matt is in street clothes as he walks to the ring with purpose. the crowd gives Matt a great ovation. Matt gets a microphone from the production booth and enters the ring. Matt says he probably shouldn’t be there tonight because of the attack he received from Drew McIntyre last week. Replay of the attack. Striker says this may be the end of Matt’s career. Yeah, right. if I had a nickel for everytime the announcers said that. Matt draws Drew’s ire, and Drew comes out. Matt tells Drew to make him go away. Drew reminds Matt and us all that Vince told him he was the future of the company. I’m sure Vince tells that to all his pet projects. Matt baits Drew into the fight and Drew takes the bait. Drew and Matt brawl in the ring, with Matt on top to begin with. Two refs are trying to break it up. That won’t end well. if I had a nickel for everytime the refs have ‘broke up’ a confrontation, only to allow the heel to take advantage… and what do you know, that’s exactly what happened. Drew stomps on Matt’s head. Teddy Long comes out and warns Drew to get off of Matt. Drew doesn’t stop and Teddy suspends him. Drew still doesn’t stop and Teddy strips Drew of the Intercontinental Title. Drew continues the assault and Teddy cans his ass. the crowd loves this, the smarks not so much. the refs and officials finally get a hold of Drew and lead him out of the arena. the trainers check on Matt. the refs and officials jaw-jack with Drew on his way out of the door. It’s actually pretty hilarious to see Charles Robinson yelling at a man twice his size. Drew exits stage right and I’m sure we’ll be seeing again sometime soon.
Backstage, Josh Matthews questions Teddy about Matt’s health. Teddy says the doctors are with him now. Josh wonders about the Intercontinental Championship. Teddy doesn’t know what he’s going to do. Josh tries to get more out of Teddy, but Teddy has to go.
Match #1: MVP vs Luke Gallows
MVP is out first to a great pop. Way better than he ever received on RAW. I had no idea MVP was this over. Luke Gallows is out next to his own sinister theme, with CM Punk and Serena in tow.
Luke with an Irish whip and MVP floats over and hits a running clothesline for a near fall. MVP with more punches but he misses the running boot into the corner when Luke moves. MVP is knocked off the apron and Luke goes after MVP and punches him before MVP is rolled back into the ring. Luke with a double underhook and Luke with a knee followed by a butterfly suplex for a near fall. Luke punches MVP and puts him in a waist lock. MVP with an elbow but Luke with an Irish whip and splash into the corner. Luke with an uppercut followed by a splash for a near fall. Luke returns to the waist lock. MVP with elbows but Luke with an Irish whip and he runs into an elbow. Luke with a kick and Irish whip. Luke misses a splash and MVP with a clothesline and flying forearm followed by a double thrust and facebuster. MVP sets up for the Ballin Elbow and hits it. MVP waits for Luke to get up but Serena gets on the apron to distract Porter from hitting the Playmaker. Gallows with a clothesline and he gets a near fall. Rey Mysterio attacks Punk and hits a DDT on the floor and he leaves through the crowd. Luke gets distracted and MVP hits the 305 for the three count.
Result: MVP wins via pinfall
Punk is in the ring as we come back from the break. Punk calls Mysterio a coward for attacking him from behind. Punk calls Mysterio back out to the ring. Mysterio comes out to a big pop, using the stage this time. Mysterio mocks Punk for doing exactly what Punk’s mystery man has been doing to him. Punk doesn’t know what Mysterio is talking about. Punk infers that Rey is putting hallucinogenics inside his mask. Punk thinks Rey wants to be saved. Mysterio says Punk is hallucinating. Rey came out to shave Punk’s head. Punk and Rey divulge over the matches they’ve defeated each other in. Rey proposes a rubber match. if Rey loses, he’ll join the SES. if Punk loses, he gets his head shaved. Punk says Mysterio is having a moment of clarity. Punk accepts the challenge. Rey doesn’t want to wait ’til Over the Limit. he wants to pledge to the Straight-Edge Society right now if Punk will shave his head right now. Punk says no and gets heat from the crowd. Rey understands the message of the SES, but not the messenger. Rey wants Punk to lead by example. the crowd chants “Shave Your Head.” Punk says his hair is a symbol of purity. Rey plants seeds of mistrust in Luke and Serena’s head, by pointing out that their heads are shaven, but Punk’s isn’t even though they’ve done all the work. Rey calls Punk selfish.
Match #2: Kelly Kelly & Tiffany vs Michelle McCool & Layla
Kelly & Tiffany are out first. Kelly in (very) hot pink and Tiffany in blue and lime green. Replay of Layla, Michelle and Vicki bullying Kelly on Superstars last night. Layla and Michelle are out next with Vicki in tow. Michelle is wearing a shirt that says ‘Smelly Kelly’. It’s juvenile, sure, but so simple I’m surprised I didn’t think of it first.
Michelle and Tiffany start things off and they lock up. Tiffany with a clean break but Michelle pie faces Tiffany. Tiffany with a drop toe hold followed by a reverse atomic drop and back elbow. Tiffany with an Irish whip and she hits a monkey flip but Michelle lands on her feet. Michelle celebrates her landing and then Tiffany with another monkey flip. Michelle goes to the floor and Tiffany goes after her but she is blocked by a wall of Vickie Guerrero and Layla. Michelle sneaks in and his a baseball slide on Tiffany when she returns to the ring. Michelle rolls Tiffany back in and Michelle with knees to Tiffany. Michelle gets a near fall. Layla tags in and slams Tiffany to the mat by her hair and then Layla tries for a splash but lands on Tiffany’s knees. Kelly tag in and connects with a shoulder followed by drop kicks. Kelly tries for the handspring back elbow but Layla with a knee to the back to counter. Kelly with a neck breaker and Tiffany is tagged in and she hits a cross body for a near fall. Kelly distracts the referee and that allows Michelle to hit the kick to the back of the head and Layla with the neck breaker for the three count.
Result: Layla & Michelle win via pinfall
Backstage, Josh is interviewing Teddy Long, who is apparently ready now. Teddy has selected four deserving individuals to compete in a tourney for the Intercontinental Title. It’ll be Christian vs Cody Rhodes and Dolph Ziggler vs Kofi Kingston.
Match #3: Kofi Kingston vs Dolph Ziggler
Kofi is out first to a nice pop. Dolph is out next to some major heat. They must still be upset about him taking out Hornswoggle. a replay is shown of just that.
They lock up and Ziggler with a side head lock and shoulder tackle. Kofi with a few leap frogs followed by a leaping back elbow for a near fall. Ziggler with a knee and then he tries to throw Kofi out of the ring but Kofi bounces off the ropes. Kofi with a drop kick and Kofi clotheslines Ziggler over the top rope to the floor and Kofi with a suicide dive. Kofi rolls Ziggler back in and Ziggler with a kick to Kofi’s head as he returns to the ring. we go to commercial. Back from break and Ziggler has Kofi with a reverse chin lock but Kofi with an arm drag to escape. Kofi misses a splash into the corner and Ziggler hits a reverse exploder suplex for a near fall. Ziggler with a kick to Kofi and he follows that with punches. Ziggler chokes Kofi in the ropes. we see Cody Rhodes in the locker room watching the match. Kofi gets to his feet and he runs Ziggler into the ropes and Kofi hits trouble in Paradise for the three count.
Result: Kofi Kingston wins via pinfall
Replay of Jack Swagger relishing about his accomplishments last week before Teddy introduces Big show as the new #1 contender and then Swagger gets KTFO.
Match #4: Christian vs Cody Rhodes
Christian is out first with Heath Slater. he gets a great ovation. Cody is out next, apparently lingering to the past as he still has the Legacy graphics in his entrance video.
Rhodes with a forearm to the back and side head lock and shoulder tackle. Rhodes with a kick and forearm followed by an elbow to the head. Christian with a flying forearm for a near fall. Christian puts Rhodes in the ropes and he leaps onto Cody’s back and then he slingshots to the floor but Rhodes gets out of the way. Rhodes mocks Christian but Christian sends Rhodes into the turnbuckles and Christian hits the Killswitch for the three count.
Result: Christian wins via pinfall
Savannah introduces the World Heavyweight Champion, the All-American American Jack Swagger. Swagger comes out to a load of heat. Swagger gets a microphone. I guess he didn’t get enough last week. I know I didn’t. Swagger reminds us all of how good he really is. he became the first high-school athlete to be nominated for an ESPY award. he was in contention for the Heisman. okay, now they’re just making this stuff up. he was Oklahoma state Chess champion. Chess, not checkers. They cut to commercials during this. Dammit. Back from break. Swagger was president of the national honor society. he wants to know where Big show was when he was succeeding. “You Suck” chants. he says Big show was in Special Education. He’s going to take Big show to school at Over the Limit. Kane’s explosion erupts and outcomes the big red machine.
Match #5: Jack Swagger vs Kane
Swagger with a waist lock but Kane with an elbow. Swagger goes for the legs but Kane with a front face lock. Swagger gets back to his feet and he shows his frustration. Big Show’s music plays and show comes out in a snazzy suit as he joins Matt and Todd at the announce table. Swagger and Kane stop their match to watch show walk to the announce table. Swagger with a kick and punches to Kane. Swagger with more punches in the corner and the referee warns him. Kane with an uppercut and then Kane with kicks and more punches. Kane sets for the choke slam but Swagger with elbows to counter. Kane sends Swagger into an exposed turnbuckle and then Swagger repeatedly sends Kane into that turnbuckle and the referee calls for the bell.
Result: Kane wins via disqualification
Savannah announces Kane as the winner, and Swagger starts to leave but stops and turns around. Big show stands from commentary and faces Swagger. Kane big boots Swagger. Kane and Big show begin dismantling the announce table. Swagger bounces Kane off the ring pole. Big show chokeslams Swagger through the announce table. Big show gets the title and poses in the ring with it.
I hate it when the last match draws all the good energy out of the entire show. a DQ victory? Really? and over an exposed turnbuckle? Really? Could no one think of a better finish to this match? In the end, Swagger looked stronger than Kane, anyway. I doubt it would have any standing on Kane’s reception had Swagger pinned him cleanly. plus, it would have made Swagger look tough even though he went through the announcer’s table.
The last match aside (and the divas match, of course), this was a build off of last week’s acceptable Smackdown show. I admit that I am amused at how this whole Drew McIntyre situation will be handled. I wonder if he really is suspended due to the wellness policy violation. if so, I’m glad his absence will be well-explained. Sucks that the Hart Dynasty have moved to RAW because they were part of the main reason I tuned into Smackdown on Fridays. there really is no excuse because they can be on both shows. more Hart Dynasty, please. They’re young. They can handle it.
Hero of the night: Cody Rhodes. he followed up a decent match with John Morrison last week with a stellar match this week against Christian.
Wimp of the night: Dolph Ziggler. all that choking out of Khali and Hornswoggle did nothing to help him out.
As they prepare to hit the road for a 16-week North American tour, the Jonas Brothers are plotting a new group album — probably for 2011, but don’t hold them to that.
TUNE IN HERE FOR BILLBOARD’S LIVE JONAS BROTEHRS CHAT TODAY AT 4:30 PM EST
“As far as the next Jonas Brothers album, I think we’re working on what that’s going to sound like, just taking our time and trying to make something great, no matter what that sounds like,” youngest brother Nick Jonas told Billboard.com during a conference call with reporters on Wednesday to promote the tour, which kicks off July 27 in Dallas. “Hopefully 2011 is the timeline, but we’re not sure just yet, and we’re in no rush. We’re writing a lot of music but in no rush to release an album in any time period.”
Oldest brother Kevin Jonas, meanwhile, predicted that Nick’s work with his other band will be one of the new influences on the trio’s next batch of new tunes. “Will Nick Jonas and the Administration have an effect? Potentially,” Kevin explained. “Nick went on a musical journey with that album Joe and I supported, and we’re so proud of that project. his influences and things he put into that may come out in new Jonas Brothers songs. We’re taking that journey right now, allowing it to take as much time as is needed for it.”
though the group decided against having a follow-up to 2008’s chart-topping “Lines, Vines and Trying Times” ready for the tour — “I think we felt releasing four albums in three and a half years might be a bit of an overload,” Nick said — fans won’t be wanting for new Jonas music. the group will have songs on the soundtrack to the Disney Channel movie “Camp Rock 2: the Final Jam,” which comes out Aug. 10 (the film premieres Sept. 3). There will also be a soundtrack for the “JONAS L.A.” Disney Channel series — which launches June 20 — that will be released July 20.
Nick noted that the brothers did not write material for “Camp Rock 2″ since they were on tour at the time the movie was being scripted. “We had some songwriters listen to our music and…write some tunes we feel we would’ve done anyway,” he said. “There’s something for everyone — there’s R&B, there’s hip-hop and then there’s kind of our more pop-rock sound…So many different sounds that I think will really attract people to the film. We’re excited for the fans to hear it this summer.
the trio was more involved in the “JONAS L.A.” songs, meanwhile, although Joe said they’re also something of a departure for the group, saying there’s “a kind of a ‘Flight of the Conchords’ feel” to the material.
the three Jonases said they’re currently putting together the set list for the tour and will include not only “Camp Rock 2″ co-star (and Joe’s girlfriend) Demi Lovato but also other cast members from the movie. They’re also working on the production and staging to, as Kevin said, “push ourselves to come up with new ideas and new, exciting things.” he said a priority this year is “really trying to incorporate video…We have a couple of cool ideas. if we can make them all work for the show, it’d be really cool.”
Jonas Brothers activity isn’t the only thing on their minds, however. Nick said he hopes to record a second Administration album, while both Joe and Kevin said they’d like to do solo projects, with Joe also expressing an interest in expanding his acting pursuits, possibly to the big screen. But those are taking a back seat for now. “It’s just been an amazing year, and we have a lot coming up,” said Kevin, whose wife, Danielle, plans to travel with him during the tour. “We’re really looking forward to everything that’s coming this year.”
The southern rap scene seemed to be cooling off over the past couple of years. well, you might want to grab a cold drink before listening to the south’s hottest new upcoming rapper. S.G. just released his debut album “Bonafied!,” on Southern Stisles Records. For those who are unfamiliar with the definition of “bonafied,” it means “like no other.” This album is definitely original with high energy beats and lyrics.
The introduction track on the album prepares you for the topics S.G. talks about in his music. Everyday is a hustle in this artist’s life, and he does not let you forget that. When he was just fifteen years old, he was freestyle battling at school to make a name for himself. Women also play a big role on the record; it seems that he is constantly being bothered by girls who can’t let him go. Hey, what do you expect when you are the south’s newest rap star?
Whether you are rocking by yourself, or having a party, this is the album you need. Every track has an undeniable energy, created by the hard hitting beats, and lyrics that are sure to get anybody hyped. If you enjoy the sound of Roland’s classic “808″ kick drum, than you will love many of the tracks on the record including, “Eryday Hustle” and “Bad.” The female vocal in track 8 “Freaky Girl,” is almost erotic and really helps set the mood of the song.
Overall, I really enjoyed listening to this album. S.G. is sure to be a name that you are going to become very familiar with, if you are not already. no matter what style of hip hop music you listen to, “Bonafied!” is sure to be a pleasure for the ears. now do yourself a favor and go buy a copy of the album!
