The Death of the Music Industry in 2008

Posted by Admin August 18, 2010

The music business as we know it is dying a fast death and gone are those days of pressing up and selling CDs. That’s bad news for those still playing the same old music game but definitely not bad news for those artists and labels willing to ride the new wave. but all is not lost with the music industry. Emerging trends in online marketing and social media optimization has created new opportunities to market to a larger audience. Those who survive will see the need to step outside of the traditional label relationship and be more cost effective while still being able to make money and have longevity in the business. Those who fail will continue to do what they’ve been doing. nevertheless, there are some hot new trends to jump start any music promotion campaign in 2008.

8 MUSIC PROMOTION TRENDS FOR 2008

Viral Videos: we saw what it did for Soulja Boy. Imagine what a little creativity could do in your online promotions.

Digital Sales: It’s killed CD sales but created new sales opportunities (i.e. ringtones, mobile marketing, etc). Combine your digital sales with your Myspace, Facebook, & social media marketing strategy.

Free Music: It’s not completely free but funded by advertisers and sponsors. Heard of RCRD LBL or Spiral Frog? Find out how Puma & other advertisers are helping their artists promote their songs.

Online PR: Print media is always a great source of publicity but notice how magazines are shrinking in size and becoming less content & way too much ads. besides, online PR gets your message out quicker and to a larger audience.

Blog, Blog, & Blog: besides being a great tool to stay in touch with your audience, blogging also helps to optimize your search engine rank.

Guerilla Marketing: Nothing beats in your face marketing that you can’t seem to avoid.

Control at the Hands of Your Audience: it worked for Radiohead when they let their fans name the price of their CD. it could work for you.

New media technologies: Myspace, Facebook, Ning, Bebo, Joost TV, Goodstorm Mixtapes. need I say more.

Rapper/producer Psycho Les of hardcore, crate-digging Queens group The Beatnuts is being sued by a concertgoer who claims she was injured at a show in Aspen, Colo.

According to the lawsuit, a “visibly intoxicated” Les attempted to pull the alleged victim, Kristin Scharrer, onto the stage while performing at the upscale resort town’s popular club The Belly Up. Scharrer alleges that she resisted Les’s attempts, resulting in Scharrer “violently hitting her leg on the sharp edge of the stage’s front.”

Scharrer suffered nerve damage and scarring as a result of the incident, and is seeking over $100,000 in damages from Les, accusing him of battery, outrageous conduct and false imprisonment. Additionally, the venue is being sued for negligence, failing to provide adequate security and continuing to serve the intoxicated rapper alcohol.

The Beatnuts have yet to make a statement about the lawsuit.

Soulja Boy Tell'em Drops '2 Milli' Teaser Video

Posted by Admin August 18, 2010

After shooting a video for Roscoe Dash’s “All the way Turnt Up” remix recently in Atlanta, Soulja Boy Tell’em has leaked a teaser clip for his track “2 Milli,” from the forthcoming album The DeAndre way.

“My album is complete, but I record every day just to do it,” Soulja said. “I been had my single; I just leaked a lot of songs that people liked just as much as [a single. This] time, I’m going to do it right, so this time, when I drop the song, there’s going to be a visual and it’s going to be money.”

The 30-second “2 Milli” clip opens with a shot of a space ship-like elevator, and the screen widens and trails down a long metallic hallway while sparks fall from the ceiling.

“I always knew one day I would become the best rapper,” Soulja Boy boasts in the clip. “I just want to thank all my fans. I dedicate this to you. I call it ‘2 Milli.’ “

As Soulja Boy begins rhyming, the elevator takes him up the side of a computer-generated skyscraper and into a futuristic cave, where he plays with the floating windows of a touch-screen computer before the clip fades out.

“I did what I wanted/ N—as did what they could/ a lion wouldn’t cheat, but a Tiger would,” he raps. “I only keep real n—as in my stable/ a million-dollar chain, I’m feeling like Gucci’s label/ So icy, I really don’t care/ Haters green as a pool table, and they’re twice as square/ Had to cut a couple bi—es/ them n—as need stitches.”

The DeAndre Way is slated for later this year. the young MC recently inked a record deal for his Stacks on Deck Entertainment with Universal Motown Records, home to Lil Wayne, and label head Sylvia Rhone.

“Sylvia Rhone really believes in my imprint,” Soulja Boy told MTV News. “Anybody that I truthfully believe in and work on, I believe that they could be bigger than me and definitely be a superstar.”

Soulja Boy Accused Of Causing Dangerous Stampede At Concert

Posted by Admin August 18, 2010

A Springfield, Ohio concert promoter has accused Soulja Boy of causing a dangerous stampede during a concert on October 22 at Prairie Capital Convention Center.

Terry Byrd of off Da Chain Entertainment told the State Journal-Register that he felt the rapper created a dangerous situation, nearly causing a riot when he encouraged concert attendees to move closer to the front of the stage.

The promoter estimates nearly 1500 people rushed the front of the stage. Following the rush, Soulja Boy’s manager cut off the sound as Soulja Boy yelled to the crowd to move even closer.

There were no reports of serious injuries although one girl was examined after being hit in the eye.

“I personally want to apologize to anyone who got hurt or feel that they were done wrong,” Byrd to the Journal-Register.

Byrd did however go on to commend Soulja Boy for a good show even though Byrd says the young rapper reneged on an agreement to sign autographs an hour before the show.

Is Hip Hop Dying?

Posted by Admin August 18, 2010

A lot of people say that Hip Hop is dying. I totally disagree. Hip Hop has grown so much a lot of hard core fans tend to hate on some of the new ways Hip Hop music branched out. I believe that the growth of Hip Hop is actually keeping the art form ALIVE.

If you look into the history of music you notice that some art forms have died out such as Blues and Jazz. Then you notice that Rock Music has stayed with us forever and it doesn’t look like it will be leaving us any time soon. Why has Rock stayed with us? Because Rock evolved and branched out just like Hip Hop is doing today. you have so many different types of Rock music it’s ridiculous.

So maybe Soulja Boy is selling ring tones and appealing to the younger artists. I don’t bump Soulja Boy myself but should we respect what he’s doing? I think so. Soulja Boy managed to appeal to a new audience and bring them into the Hip Hop genre. Think of it this way… Soulja Boy brings in a new audience for Hip Hop music, making the hip hop community grow bigger. Don’t you think these Soulja Boy fans might end up buying a Jay-Z album, Nas album or even YOUR album in the future? Now I know a lot of people who like his music download ring tones and they may just listen to “Crank Dat” because it’s a trend but I’m sure there’s a lot of kids who would dig deeper into the genre to listen to more music. I’m sure you all have that ONE artist who got your interested in Hip Hop.

Hip Hop has gotten to the point where we have people doing dance records, auto tune love song etc… but so what? does “Real” Hip Hop still exist? Yes. I think coming up in the Hip Hop game is a LOT easier than it was 5 years ago. People often complain that “real” hip hop doesn’t sell anymore but I think it all depends on your hustle. If you build up your own fan base and create a buzz you will definitely get signed to a label. labels don’t want to take chance anymore because THEY DON’T HAVE TO! but guess what? you don’t need to be “magically discovered” by a label anymore either. Now the ball is in your court. I don’t give a fuck what kind of music to do… whether it’s hardcore underground hip hop or if you invented Fart Music… if you grind and push your product you can easily become successful. I think people spend too much complaining about the state of hip hop rather than adapting. Face it! things change and it will always change. If you don’t adapt you will NEVER be successful!

Freeway Spills Beans on Jay-Z and Sigel

Posted by Admin August 18, 2010

With the rehashed hostility that Beanie Sigel apparently still has for Jay-Z, many have come to speculate why no other member of the former Roc has stepped up to try and provide more clarity.

Peedi Crakk led his own anti-Jay campaign some time ago and Oschino was quick to take his shots at Jigga along with Sigel.

As a rapper that found himself essentially caught in the middle of a beef, Freeway has finally been able to add more of his input on the ongoing issues that Beans has with Hov.

During an interview with NYMag, Philly Freezer went in on why his fellow Philadelphia native is being relentless against Jay.

“Beans was on the Roc before me, he was the person that brought me there. him and Jay had a deeper relationship than I did. Obviously there had to be some kind of buildup, ’cause I know Beans love Jay. I know he do. he got to. all the things they been through together.”

As the Broad Street Bully went on to say how business was type shady around the time Jay became president of Def Jam, Freeway had another take on things.

“I mean, I can’t complain about Jay at all. he gave me that first major co-sign. That first co-sign was enough for me. I don’t got nothing bad to say about him.”

No longer dealing with Def Jam, however, the rapper now feels in his comfort zone and actually has more of a grip on his career.

I would just do and I didn’t even know the process of getting it done, everything even down to the interviews. [Rhymesayers], it’s definitely more intimate. Everything that goes on I know about. There’s no smoke and mirrors, nothing that’s over my head. It’s just a good feeling. Feel like I’m in control.”

Who’s to say exactly when the verbal assault with stop from Sigel, but one thing is for sure and that is the fact that Free won’t be the one to hold a grudge on the past and can only push forward.
